The first project undertaken by HBV is to build 22 houses in the Hambantota district of Southern Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan Prime Minister’s Office, which coordinates the relief construction in the area, provided the land plots for construction (www.helphambantota.org). Suitable housing plans which meet the guidelines of the local authorities were selected with the assistance of the Sri Lankan committee. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed with the Prime Minister’s office confirming our commitment to finance the project. House plans and the site layout of the project were approved by the Urban Development Authority (UDA).

Abiding to UDA Specifications, each house will be located in a 20-perch (60 feet x 90 feet) lot and will have a floor area of about 600 square feet. The typical house will consist of a sitting room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a toilet. Running water, plumbing, and electrical wiring will be included. Each house will also be provided with a septic tank. The access to electricity and running water are being implemented by the government sector.
